ILLUSTRATION & COMICS ART
Illustration & Comics Art combines drawing, character development and visual storytelling. It is intended for students who want to turn characters, ideas and narratives into clear visual sequences while strengthening the drawing, composition and presentation skills needed to support that work.
Programme
Early work in the programme covers the foundations of book illustration and comics, connecting visual storytelling to anatomy, proportion and character development. Students learn to create and refine characters as figures that can function across more than one image, while drawing and anatomical study provide the structural basis for expression, pose and movement. Traditional illustration techniques support the development of an individual visual language.
Storyboard and visual narrative then shift the focus from the single image to sequence. Composition, page layout, perspective and environment design are developed together so that characters can act within coherent spaces and stories can unfold clearly across frames or pages. This is where drawing and editorial organisation meet: the image, the page and the rhythm of the sequence are treated as parts of the same narrative problem.
The later work becomes more independent through advanced specialisation, critique and portfolio development. Students analyse completed and developing projects, exchange feedback and refine both visual and narrative decisions before final presentation. Portfolio and career-oriented material helps organise the work as a considered body of projects instead of a collection of unrelated exercises, while the final work demonstrates the integration of character, environment, composition, sequence and page design.
What You Will Learn
- understand the foundations of book illustration and comics
- use anatomy and proportion when developing characters
- create and refine original characters
- build storyboards and visual narratives
- work with traditional illustration techniques
- organise composition and page layout
- construct perspective and environments
- develop and present a portfolio
- analyse work through critique and feedback
How You Learn
Teaching is distributed across complementary areas: illustration and visualisation, anatomy and sketching, and page composition, typography and prepress. Students can therefore develop the image, the character and the final page as connected parts of the same work. Critique and feedback are built into the process so that ideas can be tested and refined before final presentation.
Outcome
A set of completed illustration and comics works, stronger narrative and drawing skills, and a more coherent portfolio. A certificate is issued upon presentation of the final work.
